INSIDE ASSET

Hosted license server ensures global agility

NortelA new service to ScanWorks users, the hosted license server facility, makes it possible for a company to assign and enable a ScanWorks license anywhere in the world. Global enterprises like Nortel Networks, Inc., which has contract manufacturers in practically every corner of the world, are finding the license server a boon to their manufacturing agility.

"We wanted to get the most value we could from our ScanWorks licenses and this hosted license server is particularly useful in this regard," said Nicholas Svensson, Worldwide Wireless Supply Chain Manager at Nortel. "Our original intent was to have a central pool of licenses from which our contract manufacturers could draw. For security reasons, we thought that it would be better to have such a service outside of the corporate firewall. Obtaining this service from ASSET is a great solution for our needs."

Nortel can now assign one or more licenses to any of its contract manufacturers anywhere in the world. And the service is always available - night and day - 24x7.

"It's like having the license agility you get with software-as-a-service, but without giving up control of the software version you want to run," said Arden Bjerkeli, ASSET's Director of Customer Support. "When a user signs up for the hosted license server, they are assigned a server manager who helps them with the set-up of their license server. Then, under the hosted license server maintenance contract, the user gets the support needed to add newly purchased options, change user access settings, reset idle-license timeouts and establish other parameters. The user can also specify who has the ability to borrow a license for a period of time while they are not connected to the network."

As part of the set-up process, the administrator of the hosted license server specifies groups of individuals by IP address ranges that have been given permission to access the ScanWorks licenses. Once the hosted server is up-and-running, any authorized IP address can access and utilize the ScanWorks licenses that the company has purchased.

To guard against any downtime and ensure a quick recovery in the remote event of a server failure, backup images are maintained of the user company's license manager as well as all the settings that were established during set-up. For users who require the ultimate in availability, a triple-redundant server option can be implemented. In the event of a single server failure, the triple-redundant server option would ensure continued service. The three redundant servers are located in different facilities so that a failure at one facility would not affect the availability of the other two servers.

The hosted license server is another example of how intent ASSET is on enhancing the usability and value of ScanWorks, DFT Analyzer, Extended JTAG Coverage and all of its products.
