Debug:

Step inside for a closer look

Debugging a circuit board with an external emulator connected to the board’s test port is bounded by limitations on all sides. Now, system bring-up and circuit board debug based on embedded instruments removes these boundaries and gives you the insight you’ve never had before – insight from inside the board.

The ScanWorks® platform for embedded instruments has released board debug from the limitations of time and space. ScanWorks intellectual property (IP) embedded on the board does not rely on an external PC connected to the board by a cable to run debug routines. ScanWorks takes advantage of the processing power on the board itself to identify and isolate bugs. The debug engineer and the board being debugged can be on different continents connected by the Internet or they can be across the lab from each other. The board can be debugged from anywhere and at any time.

ScanWorks Embedded Diagnostics

What it can do
ScanWorks embedded IP can
diagnose problems with:
– Device drivers
– BIOS
– OS kernel
– Catastrophic or intermittent
hardware or software failures

How it works

ScanWorks embedded diagnostics IP is inserted into the firmware of a secondary service processor on a circuit board. From there, ScanWorks accesses the board’s main processor by way of its debug port and then asserts hardware-based run control over the system to diagnose faults and failures. Once embedded, ScanWorks IP can debug problems with first prototypes in a lab setting before volume manufacturing begins. Or, following deployment in the in the field, it can provide debug information anywhere and help identify the root causes of poorly performing systems. Some of the debugger’s functions include reading and writing to all registers connected to the processor, to memory, and to I/O interfaces; setting and retrieving breakpoints; and single-stepping through code.

What Cray said about its deployment of embedded ScanWorks debug IP
“ScanWorks provides a rich set of functionality for embedded diagnostics,” said Peg Williams, senior vice president of research and development at Cray. “ScanWorks-based solutions will enable Cray’s next-generation product development to maintain a focus on quality and reliability, while continuing to push the envelope in scalability…We believe this gives us a competitive advantage in the marketplace.”
